Dating personals are a way for singles to find one another. There are two basic types of personal ads -- those that are online, and those that are not. Years ago, the only way one could place or read personal ads was to do so in a newspaper or other type of periodical. These sites are general and inclusive in nature, hosting ads from men and women of all ages, races, locations and lifestyles. Then there are specialty dating sites, which cater to a particular preference. You'll find dating sites that cater to certain ages, races, faiths, lifestyles and preferences. For example, there are sites for Christians, Jews, interracial couples, senior citizens, gays and lesbians, BBW and the men that love them, and many more categories.

Some sites are free, but most will charge you a monthly fee to use their services. Sometimes, you can save money if you pay annually. Choose a site that has lots of members, a good privacy policy and a helpful customer service department. Once you choose your site or sites, it's time to create your profile. Your profile can include as little or as much about yourself as you like. For safety and privacy reasons, never reveal any personal information. Another important aspect of any good profile is your photo. Choose a photograph that is flattering and clearly represents how you look in person.

After you create and upload your profile and picture, you're ready to begin meeting other singles. You can search for singles that meet certain qualifications, and contact them through the site. They can do the same, so be sure to check your inbox regularly for new messages. Eventually, you may decide to meet someone in person. Stay safe and have your initial meeting in a public place like a restaurant, cafe, mall or busy park. After a few casual meetings, you'll know if you want to take things to a more intimate level.
