Tips for Teen Dating

The teen years are an exciting yet potentially difficult time for many. After all, you've got so much going on. You're dealing with all kinds of different issues such as school, relationships with friends and parents, and defining your own identity. On top of all that, you might also be interested in dating but also nervous about it at the same time. Teen dating can be a fun and exciting experience that can also be stressful.

The cardinal rule of dating during the teen years is to stay true to yourself. Don't change yourself in order to get someone to like you. You want a boyfriend or girlfriend that likes you for who you are, not who you are pretending to be. That means wearing clothes you like to wear, doing activities you like to do and being honest about who you really are. If this means that the guy or girl of your dreams won't go out with you, then they're not right for you in the first place.

Another important thing is to know your limits. While it might seem that lots of teens these days are sexually active or even promiscuous, you'd be surprised at how many are not. It's important to understand that many teens claiming to have sex aren't telling the truth. What they are doing is trying to create a false reputation in an attempt at popularity. Educate yourself about teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases before even considering sexual relations. Think about your values and what the right thing to do is. There are lots of ways to express your love without having sex. If you feel pressured by the person you're dating to do something you're not ready for, speak up. If the person truly cares for you, they'll be understanding and respectful.

One tip for teen dating is to keep things casual. Try dating in groups, or dating a variety of different people before getting serious about one. The teen years are a time of many changes, and the person who seems like your true love now may not be in five years. While there are married couples who met in high school and are still together, the majority of happily married couples met in adulthood. With that in mind, date with a sense of fun and friendship in mind. You might meet your lifetime love, or you might just learn more about dating and most importantly, about yourself!
